Understanding Root Canals

A root canal is a highly effective procedure designed to treat infections within the tooth. Despite its outdated reputation, modern dentistry has made root canal therapy a comfortable and routine treatment that relieves pain and preserves your natural tooth.

Pain Relief & Infection Elimination

A root canal removes infected or damaged tissue from within the tooth, relieving severe pain and sensitivity. By treating the infection at its source, it prevents it from spreading to other teeth or areas of the mouth.

Preserves Your Natural Tooth

Unlike tooth extractions, a root canal saves your natural tooth, maintaining your smile's appearance and function. Keeping your original tooth helps prevent issues like misalignment or difficulties with chewing.

Long-Lasting, Reliable Solution

With proper care, a treated tooth can last a lifetime. Once restored with a filling or crown, the tooth regains strength and durability, allowing you to eat and speak comfortably.

Sam B

“Have had the misfortune of seeing many dentists, and Peninsula has to be one of, if not the best practice I've dealt with. Dr Mostafa is outstanding at what he does. Would highly recommend.”

Why Is a Root Canal Needed?

The root canal houses the tooth's pulp and nerve. When this area becomes infected, it can cause severe pain and sensitivity and even spread to other teeth or areas of the mouth. Root canal therapy removes the infection, eliminates discomfort, and restores the tooth's function.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  1. Comfort First—a local anesthetic ensures you are completely numb and comfortable.
  2. Cleaning & Removal—The dentist creates a small access point, removes the infected tissue, and thoroughly cleans the inside of the tooth. Antibiotic medication may be applied to prevent further infection.
  3. Sealing & Protection—The tooth is filled and typically covered with a crown to strengthen it and protect it from further damage.
